Elizabeth M. Kort (Liz Kort) 93, of Overland Park, KS. passed away on Sunday, January 31st,2010. Funeral service will be at 11:00am, Wednesday, February 3rd, at Congregation Beth Torah, 6100 W. 127th Street, Overland Park, KS. Burial will follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to either The Greater Kansas City Chapter of Hadassah, 8900 State Line Rd., Suite 406, Leawood, Ks., 66206, or to Congregation Beth Torah, Rabbi's Discretionary Fund. Elizabeth Margaret Cunningham was born August 30th, 1916, on one of many Irish homesteaded farms, N.N.W. of Fontana, KS.; Elizabeth spent most of her life beyond age seven in the K.C. area with family and later her husband, Mr. Albert C. Kort and their children. She was the mother of four children, grandmother of five, and great grandmother of two. Elizabeth worked as an inspector at The Lake City Arsenal Plant during WWII. With her husband, she was the co-owner of AL KORTS' APOLLO RESTAURANT AND BAR, KC MO, from their marriage in 1943 through its sale in 1959. She was a member of Hadassah, a Jewish women's organization, since 1951, and served as president of several of their chapter groups. She volunteered for 25 years as the bookkeeper for their BARGAIN CENTER thrift store. She was also employed for 15 1/2 years as their office manager.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, Albert C. Kort, her father, Michael Albert Cunningham, her mother, Elizabeth Cunningham, her sisters, Margaret L. Gunz and Mary Ann White, her brother-in-law, William White, her brothers, Thomas Cunningham (who died in childhood), John Cunningham and brother-in-law, Thomas Bishop Sr.
Elizabeth is survived by sisters, Dorothy Bishop of Salina, Helen Pitnick and brother-in-law Richard Pitnick of Linwood, sister-in-law Marjorie Cunningham of Emporia, son William Kort and daughter-in-law Regina Kort of Leawood, sons Michael Kort, Robert Kort and daughter Alisa Kort, all of Overland Park, as well as many nephews, nieces, grandchildren, great grandchildren, friends and neighbors. She will be dearly missed.
