November 23, 1923 - December 9, 2017
Alice Shostak Mayer passed away peacefully, and surrounded lovingly by family, on December 9th at Care Haven Homes, where she had resided since 2014. Alice was born on November 23, 1923 and was a lifelong resident of Kansas City. Alice graduated from Paseo High School as well as the former Kansas City Junior College. Alice married Hart David Mayer in 1948 and they were lifelong members of The Temple, Congregation B’nai Jehudah. Hart passed away in 1998, a few months before their 50th wedding anniversary. Together Alice and Hart opened Hart Mayer’s Coins, Stamps and Hobbies in Waldo for over 20 years, and then reopened on a smaller scale at Waldo Antiques until 1998. During that time and after, Alice worked at Delve Market Research for 25 years. She retired at age 85. Family was always most important to Alice, and she found her greatest joy in having the family together for holidays, birthdays and everyday occasions. She was a loving mother and grandmother, where we she was admired for her strength, her knowledge, her wonderful sense of humor and most of all for her brilliant smile. Also, preceding her in death were her parents, Louis and Silia Shostak, as well as sisters Sara Gold and Ann Landie. Alice is survived by her daughters, Nancy Minsey (Gary) and Sandra Mayer (partner Christine Moser) both of Shawnee Mission, KS, as well as a son, Philip Mayer, of Atlanta, GA. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Shane Minsey (Sarah Glavin) of Kansas City, MO, as well as Hugo Mayer-Moser and Lucia Mayer-Moser of Shawnee Mission, KS. She is also survived by her twin, Emma Becker, of Shawnee Mission, KS, with whom they recently celebrated their 94th birthday together. Services will be held 11:00am Monday, December 11th at the Louis Memorial Chapel, 6830 Troost, Kansas City, with burial at Rose Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Care Haven Homes, 3848 W. 75th St., Prairie Village, Ks. 66208 where a memorial garden in Alice’s name will be built, or to a charity of one’s choice. The family also wishes to thank the staff of Care Haven Homes and Interim Hospice for the loving and compassionate care she received in her final years.
