Anne Bratt

June 25, 1928 - February 21, 2019

Anne Bratt, affectionately known as Auntie Anne and Bubbie to those who love her from across the globe, passed on February 21st 2019 at the age of ninety. Anne, born June 25th 1928 in Bargoed, Wales to Ellis and Sonie Tonkey, was an amazing woman full of hidden talents and treasures. She attended University of Wales in Cardiff where she excelled and entered medical school as a single woman in the early 20th century. While attending medical school she enrolled in the London School of Music where she trained as a pianist. Amidst these aspirations, Anne met her husband, Aleck Bratt, a corporal in the US army serving in WWII. After falling in love, Anne moved with her soon-to-be husband to Kansas City where she married, raised two children -- Alan and Avery -- and began to establish the loving community she leaves behind. Once settled in Kansas City she completed her bachelors in medical technology and went on to work at Baptist Hospital for many years. Bubbie means “grandmother,” and yet Anne is known as Bubbie by people across the globe. She was an unyielding source of love and compassion for all. Avery, her son, recalls Anne inviting her co-workers from Baptist who struggled with financial stability over to dinner weekly because “everyone needs to eat.” Anne took on active roles in the Beth Shalom sisterhood, her sons’ PTA, and taught generations of Kindergarteners to read at HBHA. Everywhere she went she was known and loved. Anne’s capacity for limitless love is highlighted further by the tremendous struggles she confronted. In her lifetime Anne buried her husband Aleck, one son Alan, two grandsons Micah and Evan, her parents, and numerous cousins. This powerful woman embodied the profound belief that family is paramount and life’s other worries are always secondary. Anne’s legacy of love, generosity, and cherishment of human life lives on in her son Avery, daughter-in-law Laura, grandchildren and partners Jordan and Allison, Sean and Lindsay, Ashur, Hanah, and Aleck, and great-grandchildren AJ, and Mila Bratt. She is loved and missed by numerous family and friends across Kansas City, the US, and the world. We have one ask of you: As Zadie said and Bubbie embodied, “May you live as long as you want and never want as long as you live.” If you feel moved to donate, please support the Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy and/or Beth Shalom.
