DOROTHY ROSENWALD passed away at the age of 95 on Sunday, March 11, 2012 in hospice care at the Kingswood Nursing home in Kansas City, Mo. A Memorial Service will be held at The New Reform Temple 7100 Main St., Wednesday, March 14th at 5:00 PM. In lieu of flowers please send donations to NCJW (National Council of Jewish Women), JFS (Jewish Family Services), CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), or MASW (Missouri Association for Social Welfare) or Mills College. Born in Denver, CO to Benedict Shubart and Daisy Newhouse Shubart, Dorothy was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Mills College. She was President of the local chapter of NCJW, as well as a National VP, and a life board member. Dorothy was instrumental in bringing CASA to Kansas City, and along with her husband, Robert E Rosenwald, they aided many Iraqi Jewish refugees to get political asylum in the US and Cuban refugees escaping Castro’s Cuba in the 1950’s-60’s. She was also President of her sons’ grade school PTA, serving on the boards of many organizations including CASA, MASW and JFS. Bob and Dorothy were among the very early American tourists to visit Mainland China in the 1970’s, and helped several Chinese families from Mainland China to obtain US residency and provided a place in their home for them while they were studying locally. In 1973, Dorothy was honored with the Hannah G. Solomon Award by the NCJW. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Robert E Rosenwald in 1989, and her son Robert Lucian Rosenwald in 1966. She leaves behind a son, Richard of New York and Kansas City, her former daughter-in-law Jana Robbins of New York, a grandson, Eric Rosenwald and his wife Gina, now of Kansas City and a great-granddaughter, Jordan Reese Rosenwald with a second great-granddaughter on the way.
