January 13, 1919 - March 19, 2019
Gustava (Gussie) Friedberg Alport, 100 years old, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away on March 19, 2019 at Village Shalom. Graveside services will be at 11:00am Thursday, March 21, 2019 at Sheffield Cemetery. Gussie was born January 13, 1919 and raised in Leavenworth, Kansas, as the oldest of 3 daughters. She moved to Kansas City and later attended the University of Illinois and Kansas City Junior College. She met the love of her life, her husband, H. William (Willie) Alport. They were married 53 years. They had a son, C. Barnett (Beverly) and a daughter, Carol Lissauer, all of Overland Park. Gussie led a busy life while being a stay-at-home mother. Her activities included: a love of knitting, sewing, needlepointing, and playing in numerous card games, especially Pan and Mah Jongg, which allowed her to enjoy countless hours with lifelong friends. Gussie was very giving with her time when it came to volunteering. She and Willie were longtime members of Kehilath Israel Synagogue and Gussie served the congregation well. She worked tirelessly for more than 30 years in many roles, from secretary, historian, and president of Sisterhood to accepting a number of responsibilities for the Purim Ball, the K. I. Ad Book Directory and the annual Grand Givers event. Her precise bookkeeping was as detailed as a top CPA! She was also honored by the Sisterhood for her volunteer work and was given the honor of Aishet Chayil (Woman of Valor) by the administration. If you played Mah Jongg, chances are your card came from Gussie. She took orders for hundreds which benefited Sisterhood. She was an active board member and donor chair of the Chai project. Gussie received her nickname by her wide circle of friends with attributes as warmth, friendliness, and cheerfulness. She was a source of support and inspiration to family and friends. She loved to be a part of her kids and grandkids' lives. Family was very important. We will miss her spirit, but the memories will continue forever. Gussie was preceded in death by her husband, Willie, son-in-law, Joel Lissauer, parents, Charles and Floss Friedberg, and her sisters, Meredith Krigel and Elinor Joseph. She is survived by her 5 grandchildren: Scott Alport (Dr. Adina), Amy Alport (David Youdovin), Jodi Shroba (Tim), Catherine Smith (James), and David Lissauer (Sara) and, also, by her 9 great-grandchildren: Chaim Pinchas Alport, Moshe Aharon Alport, Yosef Meir Alport, Devora Leah Alport, Leah Lissauer, Anna Lissauer, Isaac Lissauer, Logan Shroba, and Grant Shroba. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent to Kehilath Israel Synagogue, Vitas Health Care, or to a charity of your choice.
