Harriet Ann Feder of West Des Moines, Iowa, passed away March 20, 2012 at her home. Born on January 26, 1947, Harriet was raised in Kansas City, Missouri, where she graduated from Southwest High School. Harriet went on to attend the University of Iowa, where she earned a degree in elementary education. Harriet was known for her strong commitment to the betterment of her community and dedication to serving those in need. She served as a board member, dedicated volunteer, and fundraiser for many organizations working for the good of eastern and central Iowa including, among others, Junior League, Youth Homes of Mid-America, Variety Club of Iowa, Hope Lodge, American Cancer Society, Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center, On With Life, Children & Families of Iowa, Cristo Rey and the Domestic Violence Center. Harriet was an active member of the Jewish community, belonging to Tifereth Israel Synagogue in Des Moines and The Temple, Congregation B'nai Jehudah in Overland Park, Kansas. Harriet also volunteered and supported Haddasah and Sisterhood throughout her life. Harriet’s greatest love was her family. She looked forward to gatherings – whether it was for a tradition-filled Thanksgiving dinner, traveling with the grandkids, or a great debate with her son-in-laws, Andrew Osman and Brandt Ryder. Harriet made all feel welcome in her home. She never tired of watching classic movies and discussing politics with both friends and strangers. Everyone who touched Harriet’s life will miss her stories and strength. They will carry her sensibility and dedication to making the world a better place with them. Harriet was preceded in death by her father, Maurice “Tiny” Schwartz. Survivors include her husband, Ron; their three children, Michael, Deb, and Julia and their spouses. Harriet’s grandchildren, Nathan, Nina, Izzi and Elliott loved reading with and learning from their “Honey”. She is also survived by mother and mother-in-law, Reva Golad and Ruth Feder and sister, Helen. Services will be held Thursday, March 22, 2:30 p.m. at The Temple, Congregation B'nai Jehudah, 12320 Nall Avenue, Overland Park, Kansas 66209, followed by burial at Rose Hill Cemetery. Shiva will be observed Thursday, March 22nd and Saturday, March 24th at the home of Deb Feder and Andrew Osman.
