Jack Blackman

January 4, 1919 - July 13, 2011

Jack Blackman, 92 years young, passed away Wed, July 13, 2011. Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm Friday July 15th at The Louis Memorial Chapel, 6830 Troost Ave. Burial will be at Mount Carmel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Congregation Ohev Sholom. As a young man, Jack was a member of numerous Jewish organizations including Nordonian AZA. As an adult, he was a longtime member of B’nai B’rith and other civic organizations. Mr. Blackman’s career started out after serving in the army during WW II. He was in business with his two brothers, Abe and Dave for many years owning a grocery distributing business, as well as a chain of independent drug stores. In the late 70’s he went into a new distributing business with his son, Joel, remaining active in that business until 2002. Jack loved his synagogue – Ohev Sholom – he worked tirelessly as a fundraiser to build their sanctuary in the 60’s. He was a multi time president and served as an ongoing fundraiser and advisor. Throughout his career and personal endeavors, he was a well known and always sought after story teller, having a wonderful gift of humor. He loved photography and golf and writing as well. Jack leaves behind his wife of 63 years, Muriel of Leawood, Ks., daughter and son-in-law, Sydney and Mike Katz of Leawood, Ks, daughter-in-law, Kristy Blackman of Leawood, Ks. He was preceded in death by his son Joel, as well as his brothers, Abe, Leon and David. Surviving sisters-in-law include Sue Blackman of Overland Park and Ida Mae Blackman of Lenexa, Kansas. His beloved grandchildren include Todd Blackman of Portland OR; Julia Katz of Chicago, IL; and Robert (Ruvein) and Liv Katz of Jerusalem, Israel. He was proud of his three great grandsons – Yehuda, Yerucham Tzvi and Mordechai Katz, all of Jerusalem, Israel. The family will be sitting Shiva at the home of Sydney Katz on Sunday and Monday evenings at 7:30pm. Please call funeral home for additional information.
