Leo Shalinsky

July 7, 1929 - May 3, 2013

Leo Shalinsky, 83, of Prairie Village, KS, died May 3, 2013. Funeral services will be held at 1:30pm, Sunday, May 5 at The Louis Memorial Chapel, 6830 Troost Avenue. Burial will follow at Sheffield Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care, Congregation Beth Shalom or Congregation Ohev Sholom. Leo was born to Freda and Herman Shalinsky, in Kansas City, Kansas, the seventh of eight children. He attended Paseo High School and was a graduate of UMKC Pharmacy School, where he received the Alumni Achievement Award in 1998. After serving two years in the U.S. Army, he joined his four brothers in the family pharmacy business. Together, they operated Shalinsky Rexall Drug Stores in Wyandotte and Johnson Counties for over 40 years. In his retirement Leo was program chairman for the ROMEOs, a retired men's club, where he helped plan over 400 weekly programs. He was a member of Congregations Beth Shalom and Ohev Sholom, was an Hadassah Associate, a member of the Jewish War Veterans and a supporter of many Jewish and civic organizations. Leo was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers: Lester (Ruth), Milton, Marvin; and sister: Eleanor. He is survived by Arlene, his loving wife of 54 years; sons: Howard (Sarah) of Seattle, WA, Loren (Robyn) of Mountain View, CA; daughter: Marla (Gideon Stein) of Jerusalem, Israel; and his six grandchildren: Ariana Shalinsky; Yosef, Yael & Adi Stein; Nadav & Zahav Shalinsky. Also surviving are his brother: Joseph (Charlotte); sisters: Zelda Tasman and Harriet Waldman, both of Louisville, KY; sisters-in-law: Anne and Helen Shalinsky; brother-in-law: Gerald Rosenblum and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
