Martin Cohn

July 26, 1920 - June 6, 2014

Martin Cohn, 93, Overland Park, KS passed away Friday, June 6, 2014, at Menorah Medical Center. Funeral services 11:00 am Monday, June 9, at The Louis Memorial Chapel, 6830 Troost Ave. Burial Sheffield Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Congregation Ohev Sholom, 5311 W. 75th St, Prairie Village, KS 66208; animal rescue organizations; or the charity of your choice. Martin was born in Kansas City, KS the son of Russian born immigrants Paul “Pete” and Rose (Karosen) Cohn. He attended Kansas City Kansas Jr. College where he studied accounting. Martin served in the Army in World War II from Dec 30, 1941 to October 14, 1945. After basic training he was placed with the accounting corps at the 486th base unit in Herington, KS where he reached the level of sergeant. He received a Good Conduct Medal for meritorious service from his commanding general for his expertise and leadership in creating new Army regulations for fund disbursement. After the Army he spent his career in accounting and furniture sales, beginning at his father’s Kaw Valley Furniture store in Kansas City, KS. He went on to own and operate Overland Park Furniture in the ‘60s, and in the “70’s he opened Meadowlake Furniture in Prairie Village, the first contemporary furniture store in the Kansas City area. He was active in B’nai B’rith, Club 100, and Congregation Ohev Sholom, where he was a lifelong member. Martin was preceded in death by his parents; brother: Melvyn Cohn; and son: Melvin Cary Cohn. He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years: Leona; sons and daughters-in-law: Barton and Susan Cohn, Shawnee, KS, Donald Cohn, Sebastapol, CA, Michael Fine, Lincolnshire, IL, Steven and Beatrice Fine, Kansas City, MO; daughters and sons-in-law: Susan Davis, Overland Park, KS, Debra and David Leakner, Spring Hill, KS, Pamela Dahlgren, Lompoc, CA; sister: Shirley Levine, Overland Park, KS; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
