Nancy Louise Abrams, 53, of Overland Park, KS, passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2013 at her home. Services will be at 10:00am Friday, January 4, in the Yukon Chapel at Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Kindly omit flowers; The family suggests contributions to the Friends of Johnson County Developmental Supports, 10501 Lackman Rd., Lenexa, KS 66219 in appreciation for their care of Nancy, or Jewish Family Services, 5801 W. 115th St., #103, Overland Park, KS 66211. Born at a time when there were no services in the community for a person with Down’s Syndrome, Nancy lived at the Kansas Neurological Institute in Topeka, KS to maximize her life’s potential from age 4 to 22. She then enjoyed almost 30 years of more independent living at Faith Village (now Bethesda Lutheran Homes) in Lenexa, Olathe and Gardner, KS. She lived the final years of her life in an apartment with devoted caregivers. Nancy worked at the J.C.D.S. workshop and enjoyed other social activities including “Special Olympics”, holiday dances, basketball and bowling. She will be remembered for her sweet nature and wonderful giggle. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jerome “Jerry” and Eleanor (Wedlan) Abrams. Nancy is survived by her sister and brother-in-law: Lisa and Dr. Mitchell Hamburg, Leawood, KS; nieces and nephew: Jessica, Danny, Shayna and Carolyn Hamburg; Aunts: Dolores Wedlan, Mission Hills, KS and Betty Abrams, St. Louis, MO. Many cousins also survive. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the loving devotion of Nancy’s case managers, Angela Pitts and Rita Patience and caregivers, Mindy Nelson, Jecholiah and Donzell Nichols and Sheena Mann.
