Norman Kaplan, 89, of Overland Park, KS, passed away Monday, May 6, 2013 at ManorCare of Overland Park. Graveside services will be 10:00am Wednesday, May 8, at Mt. Carmel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Beth Shalom Synagogue, Jewish Community Center or Jewish War Veterans. Mr. Kaplan was born in Brooklyn, NY and moved to Kansas City in the late 1950’s, after graduating from New York University with a BA degree in Marketing. Here, he met and married his wife of 53 years, Ruth Apple. Together, they raised a family of 4 children. He was an executive sales representative in wholesale furniture before his retirement. Mr. Kaplan was an Army Air Corp Veteran of WWII and was a former member of Congregation Beth Shalom. He loved horses, was an avid rider and loved to travel. He also enjoyed model railroading and model building. Mr. Kaplan was a member of ROMEO’s, which he enjoyed, and volunteered with the Jewish War Veterans. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ike and Eva Kaplan; his brothers, Abe, Bernie and Alexander Kaplan and his sisters, Fannie Makransky and Dorothy Kusinitz. Mr. Kaplan is survived by his wife, Ruth Kaplan, of the home; sons and daughters-in-law: Robert and Janet Bloom, Overland Park, KS; Jerold and Robin Kaplan, Orlando, FL; daughters: Lezlie Ellard, Boise, ID and Rhonda Goff, Boston, MA; grandchildren: Elissa and Tim Rondeau, Carly and Joseph Giraldi, Stacy and Dirk Foxworthy, Jacqueline Ellard, Barbara and Doug Mead, Erin Bloom, Michael Kaplan and Samantha Kaplan; great-grandchildren: Madeline, CoCo, Alex, Lauren, Lexi and Nathan. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. The family would like to thank the staffs of ManorCare and Kansas City Hospice for their wonderful care of Norman during the past year.
