Norman Irving Meltzer, 89, of Leawood, Kansas, died on Thursday August 31, 2017. Graveside services for Norman Irving Meltzer will be held at 10:00 a.m. Sunday, September 3, at Beth Shalom’s Mt. Carmel Cemetery, 5529 Ditzler Road, Raytown, MO 64133. Later, the family will welcome family and friends to join them at 6:30 p.m. at the home of Arthur and Marlene Meltzer. Call 913-269-6374 for directions. He was born Nov. 1, 1927, in Brooklyn, New York and was the eldest of three brothers. The family moved to Kansas City, MO, when Norman was a child. After a football career at Paseo High School, Norman served in the U.S. Navy as a fire control man on the U.S.S. Iowa. He also on played on the ship’s basketball team against the touring Harlem Globetrotters. On returning home at the end of World War II, Norman needed a date for a dance by his former High School fraternity, the Dux. That date was the catalyst for a long and loving marriage to his wife Charlene Grossman Meltzer. Ever analytical and organized, Norman held a long career managing, then merchandising, shoe stores for Edison Brothers’ Stores in St. Louis, MO. He also worked on resident committees to manage and maintain the condominiums and apartments where he lived later in life. In addition, his attention to detail made him a master at refurbishing antique furniture. Norman was a loving husband and father, always proud of “all his girls” (which included the family dog). He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Charlene; daughters and son-in law: Sydnie (Meltzer) Kleinhenz, Carole (Meltzer) Goggin and Ron Goggin; grandchildren and spouses: Jacob Goggin; Casey (Andrea), Mickey, Jamey (Danielle), Danny, and Tim Kleinhenz; and great-grandchildren: William and Matilda Kleinhenz. The family would like to express their gratitude for the loving care and support from the Brookdale – Leawood community over recent months. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Jewish Food Pantry or an organization of one’s choice.
