Robert J. Winner
December 22, 1943 - November 22, 2013
Robert Jay Winner, age 69, passed away on November 22, 2013. Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm, Sunday November 24 at The Louis Memorial Chapel, 6830 Troost Ave. Burial will follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery. A wonderful husband, father, son, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend…Bob especially relished his role as “BaBa” to grandson Jaxson Rosenberg, age 3 and Maya Rosenberg, age 3 months. Born in the Bronx, Bob grew up in Yonkers, New York and moved to Kansas City with his new wife, Robin Shanberg Winner, in 1972 to earn his Masters in Counseling at UMKC. His career spanned from counseling to commercial real estate, but his true passion in life was making the world a better place in as many ways as possible. Some men have a mid-life crisis and buy a sports car, instead Bob went back to UMKC and earned his certification as an elementary school counselor and took a job counseling in a grade school in the Kansas City School District. Upon retiring several years ago, he devoted his time to mentoring kids in the urban core, helping rescue animals, and especially rewarding to him being a “manny” for his grandson. Bob and Robin shared a wonderful life together as well as their pride in their children, Becca Winner and Meredith and Zach Rosenberg. Bob was preceded in death by his father and mother, Sam and Fay Winner, and leaves his mother-in-law Patsy Shanberg, siblings Wayne and Mari Winner, Neil Winner and Gail Viamonte, Kent and Allegra Shanberg, Neil Shanberg and Liz Kundin, Debbi and Steve Solomon, and Danny and Susie Dunn. He felt lucky to have so many great friends and such a terrific family. Please no flowers. Bob would be honored to have donations in his memory sent to Synergy Services, 400 E. Sixth Street, Parkville, MO 64152 to help overcome domestic violence, child abuse, adolescent homelessness, bullying and family dysfunction. It will be a legacy to help fulfill his commitment to healing the world through love and kindness.
