Rose Evelyn Sporn, 91, Kansas City, MO passed away Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at Kansas City Hospice House. Funeral services 1:30 pm Friday, September 23 at The Louis Memorial Chapel, 6830 Troost Avenue. Rose Evelyn was born to Max and Lena Kurs November 2, 1919, in Kansas City, MO and remained a life-long area resident. She married David Sporn on New Year’s Eve in New York in 1941. In 1946 Wendy was born and eleven years later their adopted daughter, Debbie, was added to the family. Rose Evelyn taught at Beth Shalom Sunday School and headed the primary department, retiring after 47 years. She was director of Early Childhood Education at the Jewish Community Center for 27 years. She earned her Master’s Degree at age 62 from Emporia State University making all A’s. She was a life-long member of Beth Shalom Synagogue and an active member of B’nai B’rith Women serving as their program chairman. For nine years she wrote publicity for Kehilath Israel Synagogue Sisterhood. For 30 years Rose Evelyn wrote children’s plays using traditional fairy tales and her lyrics to create “Kiddy Kapers”. She loved writing parodies for special occasions. She even wrote birthday songs for Harry Truman, who was her hero! Rose Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband David, her sister, Beatrice “Bee” Sherman, brother-in-law Pro Sherman, and her brother Stanley Kurs. She is survived by her daughters Wendy Sporn and Debbie Warden and her husband Jerry, grandchildren Kelsey and Jeremy Warden, niece Sunie Levin, and nephew Lee Levin, and her feline companions, Smokey and Oscar.
