November 3, 1925 - December 4, 2020
Sherman M. Steinzeig, M.D. died on December 4, 2020 at the age of 95 years old. He was born in Kansas City, Kansas to Morris and Lillian Steinzeig. He was predeceased by his older brother, Alfred S. Steinzeig, M.D. who also practiced medicine in K.C., Kansas. Sherman was a veteran of WWII and remained stateside for his service. He received both his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Kansas. Sherman had a long and productive career as a cardiologist in the KC Metro area. He entered private practice in 1956 while also serving on the faculty at KU Medical Center. In 1970 he became the director of Bethany Medical Center’s Coronary Care Unit, and stayed there until his retirement from cardiology in 1990. This was the world’s first coronary care unit, and it was a huge honor to a part of its history. After retirement from his medical practice in Kansas City, Kansas in 1990, Dr. Steinzeig wanted to continue making a difference, so he started the Study-Med Software Company to distribute medical teaching computer programs to physicians around the country. In 2006, he started the Sherman M. and Alfred S. Steinzeig, MD, Memorial Scholarship Fund. This scholarship fund has been awarded to two Kansas residents a year. He was the founder of the K.C. Osler Society which is an interest group of the KC Medical Society. The Osler Society served as a mentoring program for medical students at KU and UMKC medical schools. Dr. Steinzeig was always eager to have instructional rounds with medical students at K.C. Hospice House and to sponsor Meals with Mentors. These meals gave medical students a chance to have conversations with retired physicians to support their medical studies. Sherman was a man with many interests. He has been a ham radio operator, photographer, wine connoisseur, and collector. He was intellectually curious about many topics and loved to share his knowledge with others. He remained passionate about the field of medicine and his strong ties to Kansas City. Sherman is survived by his nieces Francie Steinzeig, her husband Gary Sidder and their sons, Daniel and Aaron Sidder; Judy Holland, her husband Ed Holland and their children David and Anna Holland; nephew Richard Steinzeig, his wife Elizabeth Ellis and their daughters Aleah and Emma Steinzeig; longtime friend and caregiver Marilyn Vann and husband Vic. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to K.C. Hospice.
